The new-generation 2011 Opel / Vauxhall Astra GTC was spied out in public for the first time, as opposed to photos that appeared a week ago on various web sites.  Word from our spy photographer is that these pictures from last week were taken illegally as the spy who took them was trespassing on private property owned by Opel. Perhaps, as a way of distinguishing ones work, or discrediting another, our spyphotographer points out that these photos presented today are the first photos of the Astra GTC taken legally out in public.

This three-door Astra was caught testing on public roads near the Nürburgring where it will surely get more test kilometres as well. The previous-generation GTC had a panoramic windscreen in some models and featured a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine, and a turbo diesel among others.

At its most potent it was kitted with an OPC/ VXR badge and made 177kW (237 bhp/ 240 PS) and 320Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. Rumour has it that the new OPC will push out a seething 224kW (300 bhp/ 304 PS).

Taking the lead from the Ford Focus RS, the OPC will keep its FWD layout instead of using AWD for extra traction.

We will see the GTC on the roads in late 2011 after an extensive public motor show road tour.
